About the position

The Assistant Dean of Research & Chief of Staff at UC Irvine's School of Medicine is responsible for overseeing the clinical and basic science research enterprise. This role involves strategic planning, operational management, and serving as a subject matter expert on research contracts and grants administration. The Assistant Dean will represent the Dean to various stakeholders and is expected to exercise independent judgment in managing the school's research operations.

Responsibilities

• Organizational oversight of the School of Medicine's clinical and basic science research enterprise.
• Plan, design, and implement the overall strategic direction of research within the School of Medicine.
• Oversee operational management including budgeting, staffing, finance, human resources, and space planning.
• Represent the Dean to the University community and various stakeholders.
• Direct short- and long-term planning and develop policies and procedures within the School of Medicine.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• 5+ years of leadership experience in an academic research environment.
• Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques.
• Expert oral and written communication skills with a broad community of researchers and scientists.
• Management experience in academic, research, and/or government agencies.
• Excellent skills in conflict management techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs or research agendas.
• Strong knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
• Advanced project management skills, including the capability to manage capital projects.
• Expert level negotiation skills to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies.
