About the position

This position is highly collaborative and plays an active role in non-clinical student case management and advocacy by developing and implementing both long and short-term response plans. Work with complex student situations that have impacted the student's ability to be successful at the university. Examples of concerns include, but are not limited to, transition, physical and mental health, student safety, personal crisis, basic needs insecurity, and integration into campus life. The Assistant Dean will help facilitate a student's access to the college's and/or community services. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Student Care & Well-Being and works collaboratively with campus constituents, as well as, off-campus colleagues and partners. This position has been identified by Federal Law (Jeanne Clery Act) as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), with significant student and campus responsibilities. CSA's are obligated to report crimes reported to them which occurred on campus, in public areas bordering campus and in certain non-campus buildings owned or controlled (leased) by the University.

Responsibilities

  • Serves on Administrative after hours crisis response, on-call rotation as scheduled/needed
  • Oversee the Food Pantry operations for the Statesboro campus
  • May supervise graduate/undergraduate student assistants
  • Meets with students seeking assistance through the Dean of Students office to ascertain their concerns and needs
  • Coordinates student referrals and soft handoffs to internal and external service providers (i.e.. mental health treatment, alcohol & other drug treatment, housing & food insecurity , etc.)
  • Maintains accurate case management records in Maxient and establishes a system of follow up for students who have been referred to campus or community resources, encouraging compliance with recommendations and care plans
  • Maintains effective partnerships with key departments including, but not limited to, Academic Affairs, GSU Police Department, Housing and Residential Education, Student Health Services, Counseling Services, Equal Opportunity & Title IX Office, University General Counsel, etc.
  • Communicate with student support networks as appropriate
  • Assists with the development of outreach efforts to expand awareness and collaboration for Student Care and Well-being, the CARE Team, and outreach directed toward encouraging appropriate, positive student behavior
  • Provide educational programming aimed to assist in the student's overall well being and development at the university (e.g. campus student assessments, workshops, etc.)
  • Serves as a member of the Georgia Southern University's Behavioral Assessment Team (BAT)

Requirements

  • Masters degree in higher education, social work, psychology or related field
  • Two (2) or more years of related work experience in higher education student affairs, or similar field
  • Experience with case management, or related field
  • Experience working with or supporting clients in crisis

Nice-to-haves

  • Commitment to the development of an academic-residential campus environment through student-centered, collaborative teamwork across academic and Student Affairs units
  • Familiarity with referral processes and typical campus resources
  • Working knowledge of college developmental and mental health issues
  • Skilled in assessment and continuous improvement of Student Affairs programs in higher education
  • Current knowledge and experience applying best practices and appropriate legal/procedural regulations related to addressing students of concern
  • Proven ability in assisting people in unbiased reflection on behavior, decision-making, and community membership
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations
  • Three (3) or more years of related work experience in higher education student affairs, or similar field
  • Experience providing consultation to college faculty, staff, and administration
  • Experience working with a student conduct database software, such as Maxient
  • Experience managing confidential and sensitive information

  • Salary range: $60,000 - $64,480
  • Exempt position paid on a monthly basis
