About the position

The Assistant Dean, Strategic Initiatives and Chief of Staff to the Dean at the University of California Riverside plays a pivotal role in advising the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine on matters of significant importance to the institution. This position is responsible for setting priorities and executing strategies for both internal projects and external community engagement, ensuring alignment with the overarching goals of the medical school. The Chief of Staff/Assistant Dean (CS/AD) will facilitate coordination among senior leadership to create and achieve the School's strategic plan, which encompasses a wide range of responsibilities across six key areas. Firstly, the CS/AD provides executive consultation and support to the VC/Dean, which includes preparing briefings, presentations, and conducting research. This role also involves leading high-level special projects and committees that are critical to the School's mission. Secondly, the CS/AD is tasked with the development and implementation of the strategic plan, which includes establishing strategic planning processes, integrating these with budgeting and financial planning, and creating measurable goals and metrics to track progress and identify barriers. In addition to strategic planning, the CS/AD oversees internal and external communications and public affairs. This includes managing the School's website, social media presence, newsletters, and publications, as well as coordinating with Development on communications related to external funding opportunities. The role also encompasses governmental and community relations, where the CS/AD will coordinate legislative initiatives, represent the School of Medicine with community and governmental groups, and develop strategies for community engagement. The CS/AD will also provide leadership for the planning and execution of significant events such as Commencement and the White Coat ceremony, along with other major lectures and recognitions. Furthermore, the position involves coordinating non-financial data and reporting, including annual key statistics and reporting to external entities. The CS/AD is responsible for managing the budget of the Strategic Initiatives unit and overseeing career and student staff in the implementation of various projects and programs. This role requires a high level of discretion, independence, and responsibility, as the CS/AD will handle a diverse workload based on project priorities and timelines. The CS/AD is also accountable for developing and implementing a comprehensive communication and public affairs program to promote the interests of the UCR School of Medicine, serving as a key advisor to the VC/Dean and other medical school leadership on communications and external relations matters.
