About the position

The Assistant Dean, Strategic Initiatives and Chief of Staff to the Dean (CS/AD) at the University of California - Riverside plays a pivotal role in advising the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine on critical matters that impact the entire school. This position is responsible for setting priorities and executing strategies that align with the medical school's goals, ensuring effective coordination among senior leadership to achieve the School's strategic plan. The CS/AD provides executive consultation and support to the VC/Dean, which includes preparing briefings, presentations, and conducting research to inform decision-making. Additionally, the CS/AD leads high-level special projects and committees that are essential to the school's operations. In terms of strategic planning, the CS/AD is tasked with developing and implementing processes that facilitate the establishment of strategic goals and metrics, as well as tracking and reporting on progress and barriers encountered along the way. This role also encompasses internal and external communications, where the CS/AD oversees the management of the school's website, social media presence, newsletters, and other publications. Coordination with Development and other departments is crucial for securing external funding opportunities through effective communication strategies. The CS/AD is also responsible for governmental and community relations, which includes coordinating legislative initiatives and representing the School of Medicine with community and governmental groups. A significant aspect of this role is the development and implementation of a community engagement strategy, which includes oversight of external sponsorships. Moreover, the CS/AD provides leadership for the planning and execution of significant School of Medicine events, such as Commencement and White Coat ceremonies, as well as other major lectures and recognitions. The position requires coordination of non-financial data and reporting, including the annual compilation of key statistics and reporting to external entities such as the UC Office of the President (UCOP). The CS/AD is accountable for managing the budget of the Strategic Initiatives unit and overseeing career and student staff involved in various projects and programs. This role demands a high level of discretion, independence, and responsibility, as the CS/AD handles a diverse workload based on project priorities and timelines. The CS/AD also represents the School of Medicine in selected campus, system-wide, and external activities, working closely with various intra-campus relationships, including the Chancellor's Office and University Advancement.

Responsibilities

Requirements
