About the position

The Assistant Department Manager at Family Tree Nursery is a leadership role that supports the department manager while also leading a team. This position is crucial for maintaining high operational standards and ensuring a positive customer experience. The role involves overseeing employees, managing projects, and ensuring the proper care of plant materials. The Assistant Manager is expected to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and contribute to the growth and development of the team.

Responsibilities

• Support the department manager in daily operations and team leadership.
• Create worklists and oversee the ordering and receiving of plant materials.
• Train and onboard new employees and assist existing staff.
• Communicate clearly with all levels of employees and departments.
• Complete projects alongside staff while prioritizing the big picture.
• Facilitate planning of events and workshops.

Requirements

• Proven experience in horticulture sales, garden center management, or a related plant-based industry.
• General knowledge of plant material and horticulture practices.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to oversee projects and delegate tasks effectively.
• Experience in training and onboarding new hires.
• Understanding of watering techniques and systems.
• Ability to sell plant products confidently and assist customers.
• Willingness to spray or treat plants for pests or diseases.
• Commitment to maintaining cleanliness and safety in the store.
• Ability to drive a sense of urgency and ownership within the department.
• Basic understanding of business profitability and financial decision-making.
• Willingness to work weekends and holidays.
• Ability to operate a skid steer.
