About the position

The Assistant Director for Student Engagement at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke plays a crucial role in supporting the university's mission by developing and implementing programs that foster student development through active citizenship, community engagement, and volunteer service. This position is integral to enhancing the overall educational experience of students by providing meaningful co- and extra-curricular opportunities that encourage civic responsibility and community involvement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with university stakeholders to enhance student success and align student involvement with community needs.
  • Plan, develop, and implement service programs and educational activities that promote volunteerism and responsible citizenship.
  • Provide guidance for student engagement models and assess program effectiveness to enhance student retention and service involvement.
  • Advise and support non-partisan student voter education organizations.
  • Guide students on community service, civic responsibility, and civic engagement initiatives.
  • Build and maintain partnerships to offer meaningful community-based learning opportunities for students.
  • Coordinate and lead a civic learning community for first-year students.
  • Maintain student co-curricular service transcripts via the UNCP Serve volunteer platform.
  • Create and manage experiences to engage students in special events and initiatives.
  • Support major programs such as NAPSA Certified Peer Educator training, Hawk Camp, and Days of Service.
  • Strengthen community engagement programs that support citizenship development and civic education by implementing the office's citizenship curriculum.
  • Assess and evaluate programs affiliated with the office.

Requirements

  • A Master's Degree in Student Development, Higher Education Administration, or related disciplines from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a college or university setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with college students.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in community engagement and public service.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse university student population and minority community organizations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience supervising students.
