About the position

The Assistant Director of Athletic Academic Advising at CSUN plays a crucial role in leading the athletic academic advising processes within the Matador Achievement Center (MAC). This position involves providing training and support to academic advisors, advising student-athletes on degree requirements and NCAA regulations, and ensuring compliance with NCAA progress toward degree rules. The role also includes serving as a liaison to various campus support services and overseeing the advisement process in the MAC.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all athletic academic advising processes in the MAC.
  • Provide training, insight, and support to athletic academic advisors.
  • Advise student-athletes on degree requirements and NCAA academic rules and regulations.
  • Monitor and track NCAA progress toward degree rules and communicate this information to supervisors and coaches.
  • Complete preliminary NCAA transfer evaluations of prospective student-athletes.
  • Provide academic support for assigned teams and participate in recruiting visits for prospective student-athletes.
  • Serve as a liaison to other campus support services including advisement centers and major departments.
  • Oversee the advisement process in the MAC, including leading meetings and onboarding new advisors.
  • Assist with coordinating academic support requirements for assigned teams and update advisement program manuals as needed.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience, including advising students individually and in groups.
  • Upper-division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution is preferred.
  • A Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a job-related field may substitute for one year of professional experience.
  • Expert knowledge of policies, procedures, and practices of the program area.
