About the position

The Assistant Director of Student Learning Services in Undergraduate Studies/Academic Services in Athletics at the University of South Florida plays a crucial role in supporting student-athletes who may be at heightened academic risk, have learning challenges, or diagnosed learning disabilities. This position is responsible for managing the Student Learning Services program, which is designed to provide intensive academic support tailored to the unique needs of student-athletes. The Assistant Director will oversee a designated caseload of student-athletes, developing and applying effective learning strategies and study skills to foster their academic growth and success. In addition to direct support for student-athletes, the Assistant Director will manage various educational initiatives and programming aimed at enhancing the academic experience of student-athletes. This includes the oversight of the Educational Assessment Program, tutorial and mentor programs, and the IGNITE Summer Bridge program. The role requires interpreting and evaluating diagnostic results, providing recommendations for further testing, and ensuring the appropriate accommodations are utilized as necessary. The Assistant Director will also take on a leadership role within the Student Learning Services team, supervising both administrative and academic intern staff. This includes directing the hiring, training, and development of all professional and student support staff engaged in academic and learning support. The Assistant Director will collaborate with various university departments, including Students with Accessibility Services and Psychological Services, to ensure a comprehensive support system for student-athletes. Additionally, the position involves representing Academic Services in meetings and on select committees across the university, contributing to the overall academic initiatives of the athletics department.

Responsibilities

  • Provides intensive academic support to student-athletes who may be at heightened academic risk, have learning challenges, and/or diagnosed learning disabilities.
  • Develops and applies learning strategies and study skills designed to best support student-athlete growth and success.
  • Monitors the day-to-day administration of the Student Learning Services initiatives, including oversight and management of weekly and annual reports, the Educational Assessment Program, tutorial and mentor program, and IGNITE Summer Bridge program.
  • Interprets and evaluates diagnostic results, providing recommendations/referrals for further testing and utilizing accommodations as necessary.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to Student Learning Services staff, directing the hiring, training, and development of all unit's professional and student support staff engaged in academic and learning support.
  • Makes recommendations for the Student Learning Services budget.
  • Develops and implements a variety of educational training and workshops for student-athletes and staff, including Tutor and Mentor Training and Intern Development Program Training.
  • Represents Academic Services in meetings and on select committees across UGS and campus, collaborating with several university departments and personnel.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education or a related field, or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of experience.
  • 4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree.
  • 6 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for a master's degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two to three years of experience as a Learning Specialist, teacher/instructor, or related position.
  • Experience working closely with learning deficient students, developing relevant programming and utilizing appropriate learning strategies and techniques.
  • Experience selecting and utilizing testing instruments to assess the population.
  • Experience working with student-athletes, coaches, support staff, and administration in an intercollegiate athletics department at the Division I level.
  • Experience in utilizing and reading educational assessments and psych-educational testing results and implementing effective strategy and support.
  • Previous supervision of part-time or full-time staff.
  • Experience utilizing Teamworks/Retain.
