About the position

The Assistant Director, Career Development at Xavier University plays a crucial role in supporting the holistic personal and professional development of students. This position involves collaborating with various stakeholders to provide essential career readiness services, develop career competencies, and serve as a career coach for a designated group of students. The role emphasizes the integration of vocational discernment with career development tools and aims to enhance student engagement in experiential learning opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide career coaching including career assessments, major and career exploration, job/experiential opportunities, graduate school planning, and professional skill development through scheduled and drop-in appointments with both individuals and groups.
  • Facilitate both general and major-specific career programming aligning with academic departmental needs, which may include in-class presentations, campus-wide workshops, and/or student club presentations on career planning, graduate school preparation, and job/internship-search topics.
  • Leverage a strong knowledge of student development and the college student experience to assist the Career Development team in implementing creative new strategies to better connect students with employer postings, events, mentors, and on-campus recruiting activities.
  • Assist students from diverse populations in connecting with experiential learning opportunities and career development resources.
  • Assist in coordination of on-campus and virtual interviews.
  • Foster relationships with department chairs and faculty in designated liaison majors.
  • Share information with other members of the Career Development team.
  • Assist in the data collection of post-graduate career outcomes.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Human Resources, or similar field.
  • 1-3 years professional experience in career development (graduate assistantships can be counted towards years of experience).
  • Previous professional experience in career development or related field.
  • Knowledge of career development, student development theories, research practices, and recruiting trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations of students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in MBTI or Strong Interest Inventory (those who are not yet certified will have the opportunity to become certified upon starting the position).
  • Experience in a university career office working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience utilizing student information and tracking systems, such as Handshake or Banner.
