About the position

The Assistant Director of Finance at Texas A&M University plays a crucial role within the University Accounting Services department, which is part of the Division of Finance and Business Services. The Assistant Director will oversee the State Financial Reporting team, ensuring financial compliance and accountability to Texas A&M University and its constituents. In this role, the Assistant Director will be responsible for supervising staff, analyzing complex accounting transactions, executing related entries, and ensuring the timely and accurate completion of various Annual Financial Reports (AFRs). The position requires a strong understanding of state appropriations management and reporting, including oversight of budget adjustments and monitoring of appropriation balances. The Assistant Director will also oversee the preparation and completion of state AFR tasks and supplemental reports for Texas A&M University and other members of the Texas A&M University System. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, along with strong customer service and problem-solving abilities. They should be able to comprehend and apply rules and regulations in a complex environment, and have practical knowledge of governmental and higher education operations. The Assistant Director will also be involved in special projects aimed at process improvement and will prepare various reports and analyses as requested by management. Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of state appropriations management and reporting including ABEST, APS011, Binding Encumbrances and AUF reporting.
  • Manage USAS budget adjustments, Annual Method of Finance, and monitor appropriation balances versus local cash balances.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all state Annual Financial Report (AFR) tasks and supplemental reports for TAMU and other TAMUS members.
  • Supervise, train, coach, and evaluate Financial Accountant and/or Financial Analyst positions.
  • Review and approve journal entries and reconciliations performed by staff.
  • Assign and delegate incoming requests to ensure workload balance and efficient operations.
  • Assist with the completion of all daily and monthly tasks as needed.
  • Develop and implement process improvement initiatives and associated procedure documentation.
  • Prepare various reports and analyses as requested by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Seven years of experience in Accounting or Finance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply rules and regulations in a complex environment.
  • Practical knowledge of governmental and higher education operations in a specialized field.
  • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in higher education fiscal and/or business office.
  • Prior work experience in the Texas A&M University System.
  • Working knowledge of USAS, FAMIS and Business Objects.
