About the position

Utah Valley University is seeking a dedicated and experienced Food and Beverage Assistant Director for the UCCU Center. In this vital role, under the general supervision of the UCCU Center Director, you will oversee the professional management of the UCCU Center Food and Beverage Department. Your key responsibilities include planning and executing food and beverage sales and catering for event and athletic venues, managing catering consultations, handling office functions, and coordinating event logistics. As the Food and Beverage Assistant Director, you will lead part-time employees, ensure that all necessary equipment is available and properly managed for events, and maintain the highest standards of customer service. You will also be responsible for managing and maintaining all food and beverage equipment and inventory, ensuring smooth and efficient operations. Additionally, you will perform Manager-on-Duty responsibilities when required, with a schedule that includes early and late hours, weekends, and some holidays. In this role, you will be responsible for inventory management of food, paper products, beverages, equipment, linens, and uniforms. You will oversee all added services scheduled according to client specifications and will be responsible for hiring and training all part-time supervisors, staff, temporary staff, and volunteer groups. You will update and prepare Food and Beverage operating manuals to ensure catering protocols are implemented according to food safety policies. Setting standards and directing staff through the set-up and clean-up of events will also be part of your responsibilities. You will supervise staff and provide assistance as needed, ensuring that all Food and Beverage equipment cleaning protocols are followed and that event leftovers and trash are disposed of according to UVU and UCCU Center policies. Moreover, you will be responsible for scheduling rental equipment if required for events and will participate in UCCU Center weekly meetings to discuss the upcoming week's events and communicate any changes. You will also be responsible for hiring and conducting disciplinary actions if required, following UVU hiring procedures and HR protocols, as well as updating job descriptions for supervisors and staff. Providing staff with all necessary tools and amenities for success, including uniforms, equipment, and service amenities, will be essential. You will coordinate with the UCCU Center Management team and clients to ensure Food and Beverage services meet customer and client expectations, supervise the execution of assigned events, develop event staffing plans, and supervise staff during events. Additionally, you will be responsible for revising, updating, preparing, and implementing training manuals in compliance with Servesafe principles, UVU policies, and UCCU Center guidelines. This role requires a proactive approach to ensure compliance with the department's behavioral guidelines, uniforms, food policies, and schedules. You will also assist the UCCU Center Director in developing strategies, procedures, and technology solutions to ensure that staff have the required assets and systems to provide excellent customer service to clients, partners, and patrons.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited institution with an Associate degree in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management or a related field and four years of experience related to key roles and responsibilities; OR any combination of education and experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling six years.
  • Knowledge of catering event staffing needs.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services needed in event preparation and inventory control.
  • Knowledge of food hygiene and food preparation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of large event management and multi-event coordination.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Team working skills and the ability to lead and motivate staff.
  • Stamina and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong leadership and motivating skills including the ability to build strong relationships with customers and staff.
  • Skills in training, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinates.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management or related disciplines, or 5 years' experience as Catering Manager.
