About the position

Shenandoah University's Office of Residence Life is seeking an Assistant Director for Housing Operations, a full-time benefited position located on the main campus in Winchester, Virginia. This role is integral to the Office of Residence Life within the Division of Student Affairs and is designed for a professional staff member who will contribute to the development of inclusive housing communities and provide high-quality services to residential students. The Assistant Director (AD) will work closely with the Director of Residence Life (DRL) and will be responsible for overseeing housing operations, community development, and supervision of staff, including resident assistants and Graduate Hall Directors. The AD will manage specific residence hall communities and will focus on supporting and mentoring residents. Responsibilities include staff development and training, communication with students regarding facilities work, evaluation and selection processes for resident assistants, mediation of roommate conflicts, and programming. The AD will also respond to emergencies and crisis situations within the residential communities and will be required to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as necessary. This position may involve performing duties outside of the general scope to support the overall mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs. In terms of housing operations, the AD will serve as the primary housing officer, managing all functional areas such as housing assignments, key management, occupancy reports, and hall opening/closing procedures. The AD will supervise staff, manage the StarRez housing management system, and assist the DRL with various housing projects and assessments. Responsibilities also include overseeing key distribution, liaising with Facilities staff regarding maintenance issues, and coordinating the housing application and selection process in collaboration with campus partners.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and leadership to housing operations and community development.

  • Supervise staff and manage the StarRez housing management system.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life with housing projects and assessments.
  • Coordinate key distribution and manage the key database.
  • Liaise with Facilities staff regarding maintenance issues in campus housing.
  • Plan and execute the housing application and selection process.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with equivalent professional experience in Housing and Residence Life or a related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership, problem solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Professional experience in higher education with a focus on student life.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Deep understanding of housing operations and occupancy.
  • Fiscal management skills.
  • Facilities management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Supervision and personnel management skills.
  • Ability to utilize technology in residence life operations, including StarRez, Canvas, and Maxient.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Prior crisis management and/or student life experience.
