About the position

Columbia Global (CG) is a newly established initiative at Columbia University, aimed at fostering global engagement and addressing complex global challenges through interdisciplinary research, education, and collaboration. The Assistant Director of Integrated Communications will play a pivotal role in this mission by developing and executing integrated communication strategies that promote the Columbia Global brand worldwide. This position requires a dynamic and experienced communications professional who can effectively manage and deliver impactful communication solutions while building strong partnerships across various stakeholders. Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Communications (SDC), the Assistant Director will oversee a portfolio of integrated communication strategies, ensuring that all initiatives align with organizational objectives and deliver positive outcomes. The role involves providing strategic support, managing communications project workstreams, and ensuring high-quality deliverables within budget constraints. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for conducting market research, analyzing data, and reporting on the effectiveness of communication strategies, thereby informing project development and organizational priorities. In addition to strategic communications, the Assistant Director will support the development of the communications budget, monitor expenses, and keep leadership informed of financial status. This position offers a fantastic opportunity for a communications professional with a strong background in leading strategic initiatives, particularly in an agency setting, to contribute to a fast-paced organization with an international focus. The incumbent will work in a hybrid schedule as determined by the department, allowing for flexibility in the work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies that align with organizational objectives and deliver positive outcomes.
  • Provide strategic support and oversee the execution of a portfolio of integrated communication strategies, plans, and deliverables.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the SDC and Columbia Global project teams, offering expert guidance on communication best practices, trends, and opportunities.
  • Manage communications project workstreams, ensuring high-quality deliverables, on-time project delivery, and adherence to budget constraints.
  • Design and develop standards for communications success by identifying, collecting, analyzing, and reporting on data collected through ongoing evaluation and assessment.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in integrated communications, and share knowledge with the team.
  • Connect and collaborate with others across campus, in the communities Columbia Global serves internationally, and with partners to promote Columbia Global's goals, vision, and impact.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • 4-6 years of related professional experience in communications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in journalism or related field.
  • 4+ years of communications leadership experience, including setting and executing integrated communications strategies.
  • Strong communications project management skills, including budgeting, ideally gained in an agency setting.
  • Experience working internationally or for a globally-facing organization.
  • Familiarity with project management systems and the latest communications applications.
