About the position

The Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for managing the overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care within the unit. This role involves ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, promoting a patient-focused environment, and collaborating with healthcare team members to enhance patient care quality. The Assistant Director also oversees budgeting, staffing, and operational performance metrics, while fostering a culture of respect and collaboration among staff and physicians.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care on the unit.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and professional standards of care.
  • Develop quality/performance improvement programs and implement new standards.
  • Manage personnel, supply, and equipment budgets in collaboration with staff and department directors.
  • Develop long-term unit staffing schedules and ensure adequate daily coverage.
  • Monitor unit operational performance metrics, including agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Executive to establish nursing care standards and evaluate staff compliance.
  • Facilitate the provision of support services essential to patient care.
  • Maintain a safe and caring environment for patients and families.
  • Develop unit goals and objectives to support institutional values and goals.
  • Participate in the overall planning process for the service and the unit.
  • Respond to patient and family concerns or complaints with sensitivity and compassion.
  • Conduct monthly meetings with staff to address various operational topics.
  • Hire, educate, and evaluate staff, and work with HR for counseling and discipline as needed.
  • Create and maintain a supportive working environment for staff and students.
  • Promote empowerment of staff through collaborative approaches and new ideas.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary committees to improve patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State required.
  • 7+ years of technical experience required.
  • 2+ years of leadership/management experience required.
