About the position

The University of Oklahoma School of Music is seeking a full-time, 12-month renewable-term Assistant Director of Athletic Bands. This position involves assisting with the creative planning, teaching, and administration of the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band, as well as leading the Sound of the Sooners Basketball Bands and conducting a Campus Band. The role also includes teaching courses in music education and/or conducting, engaging with regional educators, and contributing to the overall excellence of the School, College, and University.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the creative planning process for the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band.
  • Teach and administer the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band.
  • Lead and coordinate the Sound of the Sooners Basketball Bands.
  • Conduct a Campus Band.
  • Teach courses in music education and/or conducting as assigned.
  • Serve on committees as deemed appropriate by the School of Music.
  • Engage actively with regional secondary school educators.
  • Maintain an active conducting/creative activity presence.
  • Contribute to School, College, and University service.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in music.
  • Record of successful teaching at the secondary and/or university levels with an emphasis on skills required to teach and administer a marching band.

Nice-to-haves

  • ABD or earned doctorate preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in drill design and music arranging.
  • Ability to develop a strong visual program.
  • Interest in cultivating a collaborative atmosphere in the band program.
  • Ability to contribute to the excellence of the academic community and build relationships with other departments.
