The role also involves working closely with the athletics marketing staff to promote the department's stories across digital and social media platforms. The Assistant Director will be responsible for nominating and promoting student-athletes and coaches for various awards, maintaining historical records, statistics, and photographs, and providing support for broadcasts of games and events. The position may require travel with teams for competitions and assisting with the student intern program and gameday staffing. Overall, this role is integral to enhancing the visibility and reputation of Austin Peay State University's athletic programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with day-to-day communications and media relations for all 16 NCAA Division I sports as directed by the Director of Athletics Communications.
  • Perform the role of an internal beat reporter, focusing on telling compelling stories in various formats.
  • Assist with content generation and management of the athletics department website.
  • Write and edit various department communication materials, including media guides, postseason publications, press releases, and game notes.
  • Work closely with athletics marketing staff to promote stories through digital and social media platforms.
  • Develop and write press releases about coaches and student-athletes and disseminate this information to the media and public.
  • Nominate and promote student-athletes and coaches for awards.
  • Maintain historical records, statistics, and photographs for the department.
  • Provide support for television, radio, and video/audio streaming broadcasts of games and events.
  • Assist with the student intern program and gameday staffing.
  • Travel with teams when deemed appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Previous experience involving Athletics Communications
  • Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, video editing software)
  • Demonstrate knowledge and commitment to compliance with APSU, ASUN, and NCAA policies, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations and the public
  • Ability to detect and correct grammatical and spelling errors in written correspondence
  • Ability to maintain files accurately in paper and software programs
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively supervise personnel and complete associated personnel actions
  • Knowledge of NCAA and OVC rules related to the responsibilities of this position
  • Ability to efficiently use statistics and statistical programs (StatCrew and Automated Scorebook)
  • Ability to effectively coordinate events and programs with the media
  • Ability to write, edit and/or develop articles, reports, and publications
  • Ability to edit video
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and reports
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, including irregular and extended hours
  • Ability to travel with assigned teams for competitions as required.
