About the position

The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at the University of Michigan plays a crucial role in shaping the external narrative surrounding Michigan Athletics. This position is responsible for managing communications initiatives for assigned sports and department initiatives, engaging with various media and stakeholders to promote the university's athletic programs. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including media relations, content creation, social media management, and event coordination, all aimed at enhancing the visibility and reputation of Michigan Athletics.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively communicate and solicit national media coverage for events and feature stories on Michigan athletes and teams.
  • Direct game coverage for assigned sports and assist in game coverage for additional sports.
  • Supervise and coordinate game day communications operations and staff in press areas for selected sports.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with local, regional, and national media covering U-M Athletics.
  • Write and edit various department communication materials, including press releases, feature stories, and game notes.
  • Contribute to the department's website as a key source of information regarding University of Michigan Athletics.
  • Assist in department's social media communication efforts and collaborate on content strategy.
  • Promote student-athletes for various national and conference awards.
  • Assist in administrative operational areas such as game day staffing and special events.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years of relevant work experience in collegiate athletic communications or equivalent experience in non-athletic communications.
  • In-depth knowledge of the digital and social landscapes; must be active in social media.
  • Familiarity with graphic design technologies (Adobe Creative Suite) and web technologies, including basic HTML and CMS tools.
  • Outstanding organizational, communication, writing, and interpersonal skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of in-game statistical programs (Stat Crew/Genius) and ability to input data during games.
  • Bachelor's degree in sport management, communications, sport marketing, journalism, or related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree.
  • Graphic design and/or multimedia storytelling and editing experience.
  • Passion for intercollegiate athletics and an intuitive sense of trends in the marketplace.
  • Experience leading staff as a direct supervisor.
