The Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations at Christopher Newport University (CNU) is a pivotal role that provides leadership and management across all facets of the Department of Athletics. This position is responsible for overseeing the operational aspects of athletic programs, ensuring that facilities are well-maintained and ready for use, and supporting head coaches in their administrative needs. The Assistant Director will serve as the sport administrator for assigned sports, guiding head coaches on budgetary, personnel, and strategic initiatives. This role requires a proactive approach to facility management, including the recruitment, training, and supervision of student and part-time employees to maintain athletic facilities at a high standard. In addition to facility oversight, the Assistant Director will assess and recommend maintenance and capital construction needs to the Director of Athletics. They will ensure that all athletic facilities are prepared for practices and competitions, coordinating routine maintenance and housekeeping to provide excellent customer service to participants and spectators. Effective communication with head coaches is essential to understand their facility needs and manage the daily use schedule efficiently, resolving any scheduling conflicts that may arise. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for establishing and managing stadium light schedules to promote responsible energy consumption and coordinating the setup of track and field meets. This includes supervising staff and scheduling third-party rental organizations for the use of outdoor athletic facilities. The role requires collaboration with various internal departments, such as University Grounds and Scheduling and Events, to ensure a positive relationship and timely communication regarding home athletic events. A strong emphasis is placed on customer service, safety, and professionalism in this role. The Assistant Director is expected to demonstrate a positive attitude, treat all individuals with dignity and respect, and fully support the university's commitment to a 'Students First' philosophy. This position also entails responsibilities related to workplace safety, including training employees in safety standards and reporting any unsafe conditions or incidents promptly. The Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations will perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the athletics department.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the sport administrator and supervisor for head coaches as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • Oversee the department's facility and operations units, including recruiting, training, and supervising student and part-time employees.
  • Assess and recommend maintenance and capital construction needs to the Director of Athletics.
  • Ensure athletic facilities are prepared for practice and competition.
  • Coordinate routine maintenance and housekeeping for high customer service levels.
  • Communicate with head coaches to understand facility needs and manage daily use schedules.
  • Establish and manage stadium light schedules for efficient energy consumption.
  • Coordinate the setup of track and field meets and supervise required staff.
  • Schedule and supervise third-party rental organizations for outdoor athletic facilities.
  • Serve as the Department of Athletics liaison with internal departments such as University Grounds and Scheduling and Events.
  • Develop and maintain positive customer service relations within the department and with all constituencies.
  • Review and communicate safety issues to ensure a safe workplace.
  • Follow workplace safety regulations and report unsafe conditions.
  • Promote a safe work environment by ensuring implementation of safety regulations and training employees.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or bachelor's degree with equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience working in a sports or recreation environment.
  • Prior experience in facility or maintenance operations.
  • Current employee of Christopher Newport University.
