About the position

The Assistant Director for Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Wellness at Salem State University serves as the Head Athletic Trainer, responsible for directing and coordinating all activities and personnel within the athletic training room. This role involves overseeing the provision of medical services to the university's athletic programs and students, as well as developing and managing a comprehensive wellness support program for student-athletes. The Assistant Director will play a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of student-athletes, focusing on their physical and mental well-being. In this position, the Assistant Director will be responsible for the overall development, implementation, and assessment of sports medicine services. This includes managing the daily operations of the athletic training room, which encompasses prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of intercollegiate athletes. The role also involves overseeing student-athlete wellness programming, with an emphasis on mental health, strength and conditioning, diversity and inclusion, and nutrition. The Assistant Director will be present at home athletic contests and provide travel coverage for assigned sports teams, ensuring that athletes receive the necessary medical attention during competitions. Additionally, the Assistant Director will assist the Team Physician during weekly visits to the athletic training room, onboard and mentor graduate athletic training students, and maintain accurate medical records and injury reports. The position requires a commitment to diversity and inclusion, demonstrating sensitivity to individuals from various backgrounds and learning styles. The Assistant Director will coordinate referrals to specialists, work with health insurance companies, and provide education on drug testing and sports performance supplements. Furthermore, the role includes overseeing the Equipment Room, organizing strength and conditioning programs, and evaluating the performance of staff assistant athletic trainers. The Assistant Director will also supervise athletic training students during clinical rotations and serve as a mentor and role model.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate all activities and personnel of the athletic training room.
  • Oversee and assist in providing medical services to athletic programs and students.
  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive student-athlete wellness support program.
  • Implement and assess sports medicine services, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for intercollegiate athletes.
  • Oversee student-athlete wellness programming focusing on mental health, strength and conditioning, diversity and inclusion, and nutrition.
  • Provide presence at home athletic contests and travel coverage with sports teams as assigned.
  • Assist Team Physician in weekly athletic training room Doctor's visits.
  • Onboard, supervise, and mentor graduate athletic training students.
  • Update software program for athletes' medical files, injury reports, and rehabilitation programs.
  • Coordinate referrals with team physicians' office staff for athletes needing specialists.
  • Work with health services to update athletes' medical records and pre-participation physical examinations.
  • Coordinate with health insurance companies regarding athletes' care and serve as primary contact for secondary insurance carrier.
  • Counsel athletes and refer to specialists as needed.
  • Relay drug testing and sports performance supplement questions and education to athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Oversee Equipment Room, including reconditioning of equipment and certification for use by the team.
  • Organize and supervise strength and conditioning programs for student-athletes.
  • Evaluate and sign off clinical proficiencies and competencies for athletic training students.
  • Supervise and coordinate First Aid and Adult CPR w/ AED training for coaches and staff as requested by Athletic Director.
  • Oversee athletic training services for summer sports camps as needed.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Athletic Training.
  • 5 years previous experience in a college or comparable co-educational setting.
  • NATA certified.
  • Massachusetts Licensure or eligible to gain license.
  • First Aid & CPR certified.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctorate Degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Public Health, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Three years experience in supervision of athletic training staff and student staff.
  • CPR instructor certification.
