About the position

The Assistant Director of Communications leads the Communications Division within the Public Affairs Department at Opportunity Home San Antonio. This role is pivotal in developing and implementing an integrated organization-wide communications strategy aimed at enhancing the organization's reputation and advancing its strategic goals. The Assistant Director manages day-to-day operations of the department, oversees internal and external communications, and collaborates with senior and executive teams to ensure effective messaging and outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness of the organization's programs, initiatives, and leaders.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Communications and Public Affairs Department.
  • Support executive leadership and senior management with crisis communications and day-to-day operations as part of reputation management.
  • Act as an organizational spokesperson and respond to media inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with various members of the media.
  • Assist executive leadership in developing messaging, official responses, speeches, and other important organizational messages.
  • Lead earned media strategy including story placement in top-tier local, state, and national media news outlets.
  • Implement internal communications to provide consistent and timely information to employees.
  • Oversee external communications and outreach to residents, elected officials, community organizations, and the general public.
  • Manage the organization's communications and branding across various online and print platforms.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of the organization's website.
  • Manage and implement special events such as grand openings and press conferences.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures to enhance departmental efficiency.
  • Supervise department staff, set performance goals, and monitor productivity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field.
  • Ten years of experience in public relations, corporate communications, or marketing with a focus on public and digital communications.
  • Strong writing, interview, and verbal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and Google Suite applications.
  • Experience managing external consultants such as graphic designers and writers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Ability to learn cloud technologies such as LucidChart.
  • Basic understanding of Virtual Private Network (VPN) access.
