About the position

The City of St. Peters is seeking an experienced and dynamic Assistant Director of Finance to join the Finance Department. This role involves supervising and directing financial and operational activities, ensuring the accuracy of financial records, and contributing to departmental policy development. The Assistant Director also serves as the acting Department Head in the absence of the Finance Director, making this position key to the stability and success of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and train Finance Department staff, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, performance evaluations, and, if necessary, termination.
  • Assist in budget preparation for the Finance Department, monitor adherence to budgetary constraints, and manage related documentation.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and oversee regulatory actions and capital purchases.
  • Direct general accounting activities, ensuring robust internal control systems and accuracy in financial processes.
  • Oversee and participate in maintaining the central accounting system, including the year-end close process.
  • Take primary responsibility for annual audit preparations, including journal entries, audit schedules, and statistical schedules for financial reporting.
  • Manage and oversee cash investments, ensuring accurate records and documentation.
  • Prepare, reconcile, and review various financial accounts, analyses, statements, reports, and maintain organized financial files.
  • Monitor account balances and facilitate the transfer of funds as necessary.
  • Serve as City Collector, managing the assessment and collection of all City taxes and revenues as outlined by Missouri law and city ordinances.
  • Address complex problems, develop solutions, and handle confidential or sensitive information with discretion.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with City safety standards and take on additional responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of relevant job experience with increasingly responsible supervisory experience.
  • Experience in comprehensive financial report preparation.
  • Working knowledge of computerized financial systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
