About the position

The Assistant Director of Marketing at Northwestern University plays a crucial role in the marketing and promotion of Northwestern Athletics, with a specific focus on select sport programs, particularly the 'Cats Women's Basketball and Softball programs. This position is integral to the development and execution of strategic marketing plans aimed at enhancing brand awareness, driving ticket sales, and generating revenue. Reporting directly to the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, the Assistant Director will collaborate closely with various members of the Athletic Department and external contacts to ensure the successful implementation of marketing initiatives. In this role, the Assistant Director will serve as the primary contact for the Marketing department for designated cross-functional teams overseeing various sports programs. Responsibilities include creating and executing comprehensive marketing, ticket sales, social media, and public relations plans for assigned sports programs. This involves coordinating calendars and timelines with each external affairs unit to ensure alignment and effectiveness in marketing efforts. Additionally, the Assistant Director will act as the gameday event director and producer for assigned sports, which includes writing game scripts, directing in-game fan experience elements, ensuring sponsorship fulfillment, and overseeing gameday staff. The position also requires serving as a liaison between the sports programs and the community relations area to enhance the visibility of the teams' community involvement. The Assistant Director will assist in executing gameday events for home football and other assigned games, managing interns, and ensuring that on-field and on-court sponsorship elements are executed properly. Furthermore, the role involves assisting with special programs and community relations events for the athletic department, as well as liaising with various constituents on campus and within the Evanston and Chicago communities. Adherence to all Department and University policies, as well as NCAA and Big Ten Conference regulations, is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the contact from the Marketing department for select cross-functional teams overseeing various sports programs.
  • Facilitate the creation and implementation of a comprehensive marketing, ticket sales, social media and public relations plan for assigned sports programs.
  • Act as the gameday event director and producer for assigned sports programs, including writing game scripts and directing in-game fan experience elements.
  • Ensure sponsorship fulfillment and oversee the scheduling and onsite management of gameday staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between the sports program and the department's community relations area to enhance the profile of the team's community involvement.
  • Assist in executing gameday events for home football and other assigned games, managing interns and ensuring on-field/on-court sponsorship elements are executed.
  • Assist with special programs and community relations events for the athletic department.
  • Liaise for the marketing department with various constituents on campus and within the Evanston and Chicago communities.
  • Adhere to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as NCAA and Big Ten Conference regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Two years or more of relative experience in advertising, marketing, graphic design, content creation, public relations or other similarly related field.
  • Previous experience working for a collegiate or professional athletics team, organization or league.
  • Proven track record of delivering success in marketing, graphic and web design, content creation, and public relations.
  • Previous experience with game production programs (ShoFlo, Click Effects, Sound Director, etc).
  • Previous experience with paid digital and email marketing systems and processes.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across all teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Professional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at once and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and effectively interact with diverse populations.
  • Ability to establish engaging relationships within and across racialized and other marginalized communities.
