About the position

The Colorado School of Mines is seeking an Assistant Director of the Office of Institutional Equity, who will focus on fostering an inclusive and accessible campus environment. This role is integral to advancing the university's commitment to compliance and support for individuals with disabilities. As the 504 Coordinator, the individual will act as a key liaison with federal and state agencies, driving the development and implementation of innovative accessibility initiatives, and leading vital training programs for faculty, staff, and students. The Assistant Director will serve as the primary ADA/504 liaison with federal and state agencies and institutions, performing ongoing assessments, policies, procedures, and education for disability-related grievances, compliance, and campus accommodations. In this role, the Assistant Director will maintain current information regarding state and federal laws and regulations, ensuring that the university's nondiscrimination statements, access information, grievance procedures, and other disability-related policies are posted and distributed as required. The individual will assess and ensure that services, activities, and facilities are accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities, and will facilitate appropriate campus assessments for accessibility to continuously monitor campus needs related to disability. Collaboration with other university professionals, including Information Technology, Facilities and Grounds, Human Resources, Student Life, and Disability Student Services, will be essential to establish consistent university-wide procedures for notification of rights, referral, evaluation, planning, and implementation for campus. The Assistant Director will also perform intake meetings with parties to reports and complaints of discrimination and sexual misconduct, conduct prompt and impartial inquiries/investigations into disability-related grievances, and track and report on the volume and frequency of intakes, referrals, communications, and resolutions. Additionally, the individual will work with appropriate campus offices to develop, deliver, and track education on topics related to accommodations, grievances, access, and rights as they pertain to disability, ensuring that the university community is well-informed about policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary ADA/504 liaison with federal and state agencies.
  • Drive the development and implementation of innovative accessibility initiatives.
  • Lead training programs for faculty, staff, and students regarding disability accommodations.
  • Maintain current information regarding state and federal laws and regulations related to disabilities.
  • Ensure the university's nondiscrimination statements and disability-related policies are posted and distributed as required.
  • Assess and ensure that services, activities, and facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities.
  • Facilitate campus assessments for accessibility to monitor needs related to disability.
  • Serve as the principal 504 compliance coordinator for the university.
  • Collaborate with university professionals in overlapping responsibilities.
  • Receive and review requests from visitors to campus for reasonable accommodations.
  • Perform intake meetings for reports and complaints of discrimination and sexual misconduct.
  • Conduct inquiries/investigations into disability-related grievances and accommodation disputes.
  • Track and report on volume and frequency of intakes and resolutions.
  • Develop and deliver education on accommodations, grievances, and rights related to disability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Student Development, Education, Law, Criminal Justice, or related field.
  • Four or more years of experience in case management of ADA/504 requests and/or grievances.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal and state civil rights laws and regulations.
  • Ability to apply 504 requirements to achieve reasonable accommodations.
  • Experience providing training, guidance, and education to various audiences.
  • Strong skills in conflict resolution and problem-solving techniques.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Juris Doctorate, Masters, or advanced degree relevant to the position.
  • Experience applying 504 requirements in a higher education setting.
  • In-depth understanding of Title VII, Title IX, and VAWA regulations.
  • Background in providing direct services to parties to complaints of policy violations.
  • Knowledge of complexities surrounding disability in a college setting.
  • Experience with Maxient Case Management system.
