In this role, the Assistant Director will engage in a variety of tasks, including importing daily program logs, producing underwriting spots, and creating audio promos. They will also serve as a local host and newscaster during NPR's news programs, mixing their own board and interacting with the station's automation system. The position requires a proactive approach to managing digital content, including the creation and editing of daily content for the station's website and social media platforms. The Assistant Director will also support the Director in responding to technical and operational emergencies, provide digital content support during critical news events, and assist in on-air fundraising efforts. Compliance with FCC regulations and maintaining the online Public Inspection File are also key responsibilities. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including NPR Digital Services and the university's Information Technology Services department, to ensure that KCLU's digital presence is robust and effective. Responsibilities

  • Supports daily station operations, including importing of daily program log and merging/editing into Enco DAD automation and playout system.
  • Produces underwriting spots and audio promos, updating promo scripts as necessary.
  • Serves as a local host/newscaster during NPR's news programs, mixing own board and interacting with the station's automation system.
  • Creates, produces, and edits daily content for KCLU.org.
  • Oversees and facilitates daily content for KCLU's social media platforms.
  • Responds during non-business hours to technical/operational emergencies, either remotely or onsite when necessary.
  • Provides digital content and broadcast support during nighttime, holiday, and weekend news emergencies.
  • Assists in producing on-air membership drives and other on-air fundraising days, serving as one of KCLU's on-air fundraisers.
  • Ensures compliance with FCC and other regulatory requirements, including online Public Inspection File, EAS, and annual EEO reports and filings.
  • Provides digital content support to station colleagues as needed.
  • Serves as liaison with key content and technical partners, e.g., NPR Digital Services, Public Media Apps, and institutional Information Technology Services (ITS) department.
  • Trains new staff in the use of KCLU.ORG Content Management System.
  • Works with Director of Programming and Operations and campus Facilities to ensure KCLU Broadcast Center is properly maintained and cared for.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university or four years of professional experience in radio or television broadcasting.
  • Experience working with/maintaining broadcast equipment and automation software.
  • Experience with online/website content management systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Public media experience.
  • Experience as a full-time host for an NPR News magazine program and understanding of optimal break flow.
  • Ability and experience participating in on-air fundraising and ability to pitch with passion and clarity.
  • Experience with Enco DAD or similar broadcast playback and automation systems.
  • Experience with NPR Grove CMS.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing.
  • Knowledge of relevant FCC rules and California Digital Privacy law.
