About the position

The position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Engineer, Planning and Design Division. The selectee will supervise a diverse team of professional and technical staff, overseeing various planning and engineering projects, including master planning, project management, and architectural initiatives. The role requires strong leadership skills to guide the team in achieving strategic objectives while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and equal employment opportunity goals.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise professional, technical, supervisory, permanent, temporary, and contract support staff.
  • Provide professional leadership and administrative direction for a team of designers, planners, architects, and engineers.
  • Establish guidelines and performance expectations for employees and communicate them clearly.
  • Provide guidance on performance evaluations and ensure mutual understanding of performance standards.
  • Lead major organizational functions for planning, programming, architectural, preservation, and engineering solutions.
  • Oversee program execution, including project status development and review.
  • Develop independent assessments of work in progress to evaluate product efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provide strategic direction and guidance for overall project execution, including design and renovation of significant buildings.
  • Conduct periodic program review and analysis briefings to compare progress with objectives and milestones.
  • Mentor and provide guidance for functional managers to resolve technical problems and conflicts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in professional engineering or architecture from an accredited institution.
  • At least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service.
  • Experience in planning, project controls, and oversight of engineering and architectural initiatives.
  • Experience serving as an administrative supervisor providing direction to a team of professionals.
  • Experience working with Congressional leadership and external agencies to advance program objectives.

Nice-to-haves

  • Registration as a professional engineer or architect.
  • Experience in managing large-scale projects with national significance.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
