About the position

The Assistant Director of Residence Life at the University of Montana Western is a full-time, live-in position responsible for developing and administering a comprehensive residence life program for approximately 350-400 residential students. This role aims to create a supportive and enriching campus environment that promotes academic success and personal growth among students. The Assistant Director will oversee residence life processes, manage staff recruitment and training, and foster community development within the residence halls.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all residence life processes and timelines using StarRez software.
  • Assist in administrative responsibilities for residence halls, including opening and closing procedures each semester and summer.
  • Plan, execute, and refine the recruitment, hiring, and training process for residence life staff.
  • Develop short and long-term growth plans for student employees.
  • Enhance the personal and professional development of staff through training sessions and meetings.
  • Coordinate all facets of summer conference housing.
  • Oversee co-curricular and extra-curricular programming in residence halls.
  • Collaborate with Area Coordinator to monitor programming requirements and effectiveness.
  • Advise committees or special project groups as needed.
  • Cultivate positive, inclusive communities among students and create a safe environment.
  • Address community issues and assist in handling Student Code of Conduct violations.
  • Engage with campus recruitment and retention programs.
  • Participate in emergency response and planning for university housing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in residence life or higher education.
  • Proven leadership, organizational, and management abilities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse individuals.
  • Proficiency in public speaking and written communication.
  • Experience in programming, student advising, conflict mediation, and crisis response.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and teamwork-oriented work environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in higher education, counseling, education, or a related field.
  • Experience with learning communities and specialized interest housing.
  • History in advising student groups and conducting hearings as a hearing officer.
