About the position

As the Assistant Director of Operations for the Regional Laboratory Flow Cytometry, you will play a pivotal role in directing and managing the daily operations of a major clinical laboratory department. This position encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including overseeing personnel activities, ensuring technical oversight, managing workflow, and maintaining budgetary compliance. You will be responsible for ensuring that all operations meet federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, thereby guaranteeing the highest standards of diagnostic excellence and patient care. In this role, you will lead a team of laboratory professionals, recruiting, hiring, and training staff to ensure their competency and professional growth. You will motivate your team and foster an environment that encourages continuous improvement and quality management. Your responsibilities will also include monitoring personnel utilization and material usage rates to control costs effectively, as well as analyzing fluctuations in test types and volumes to implement corrective actions as necessary. You will participate in the design and evolution of the integrated laboratory quality system for the Regional Laboratory and Northern California Region, ensuring compliance with all relevant accreditation agencies. Additionally, you will implement effective risk control processes and serve as the primary liaison for ongoing and new issues related to laboratory operations. Your role will also involve coordinating the startup, implementation, and maintenance of new services or the transfer of existing services, ensuring that all projects align with the laboratory's goals of providing quality service and client support in a cost-effective manner. As a key member of the management team, you will develop transition plans and timelines for new services and outreach programs, monitor milestones, and coordinate internal resources to support these initiatives. You will also serve as the Department Manager in your absence, ensuring continuity of operations and leadership within the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage the day-to-day operations for a major clinical laboratory department or multiple sections.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and ensure competency of staff.
  • Motivate and encourage professional growth among team members.
  • Control costs by monitoring personnel utilization and material usage rates, analyzing fluctuations in test types and volumes, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Implement departmental Total Quality Management practices.
  • Participate in the design and evolution of the Regional Laboratory and Northern California Region integrated laboratory quality system.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies' rules and regulations.
  • Implement effective risk control processes.
  • Research and resolve client problems and issues.
  • Oversee and coordinate startup, implementation, and maintenance activities for new services or transfer of services.
  • Participate in department, inter-department, inter-facility, and inter-regional projects to achieve quality service and client support.
  • Develop transition plans and timelines for new services/tests, outreach programs, or transfer of work, and monitor milestones to achieve service expectations.
  • Coordinate internal resources to support new services.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to RILIS/ITS for ongoing and new issues.
  • Develop needs analysis as appropriate.
  • Coordinate the integration of secondary laboratory information systems with RILIS.
  • Serve as Department Manager in his/her absence.

Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a high-volume clinical laboratory required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a supervisory/managerial position required.
  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or related field required, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Clinical Microbiologist Scientist License (California) OR Clinical Hematologist Scientist License (California) OR Clinical Chemist Scientist License (California) OR Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist License (California) OR Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist License (California) OR Clinical Toxicologist Scientist License (California) OR Clinical Immunohematologist License (California) OR Clinical Laboratory Scientist License (California) OR Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist License (California) required.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and accreditation agency regulations required.
  • Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Masters degree preferred.
