About the position

The College of Medicine - Tucson (COM-T) is seeking an Assistant Director, Research and Graduate Studies to support the office of the Vice Dean of Research and Graduate Studies. This position is responsible for the operational management of the research and graduate student mission. The successful candidate will provide senior-level counsel and operational support to ensure that research administration and operational and strategic planning services are provided in the most efficient and effective manner. Demonstrating the highest level of integrity, this role will lead in the implementation of strategic planning efforts for the research and graduate student mission. The position will interface with faculty to generate new lines of research and enable the growth of the scientific enterprise. The position also interfaces with graduate students to develop programs that create a graduate student community within COM-T. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and ensuring that research operational policies and procedures are followed through interfacing with COM-T departments and centers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the operational activities of the research mission within COM-T.
  • Ensure that operational research and related academic questions are answered in accordance with research policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the management and review of research support applicants; facilitate recruitment at the Dean's Office level, and manage research agreements.
  • Apprise the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and/or his/her designee of project status.
  • Assist departmental and Dean's Office leadership in the development of research initiatives and retention of research faculty.
  • Provide strategic support on ongoing projects and initiatives that strengthen the research and graduate student mission.
  • Coordinate with research faculty, departmental, center and college core services leadership to determine research needs and planning.
  • Provide oversight to existing and new programmatic activities, including assessment of national, state and foundation grant opportunities.
  • Strategically support process and procedure development for research initiatives across COM-T.
  • Coordinate event programs for faculty graduate students to ensure a robust environment for scientific growth and graduate student community within COM-T.
  • Assist graduate group leaders on innovative approaches and implementation of graduate programs and curriculum.
  • Identify, collect and analyze scientific grant and graduate student metrics and provide reports when requested.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations on implementation of University policy on graduate students, graduate groups, and training programs (e.g. T32).
  • Assist in advising the Deputy Dean of Finance and/or designee on budgetary impact of ongoing research initiatives that reside in both academic departments and the research and graduate studies section of the Dean's Office.
  • Develop budgets and financial models for existing and proposed programs/recruitments.
  • Contribute to annual research and graduate student budgeting guidelines with respect to research and graduate student funds flows.
  • Participate in COM-T Research and Graduate Student budget allocation approval process.
  • Monitor expenditures to ensure budgetary alignment.
  • Review and provide recommendations on departmental capital renovation projects.
  • Inform leadership of policy issues resulting from financial decision making.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience, including 2 years of managerial experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
