About the position

The Assistant Director for Systems Infrastructure at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign plays a vital role in managing and enhancing IT systems and facility infrastructure. This position is responsible for ensuring reliable and flexible service delivery for the campus community by overseeing data center operations, virtualization, data storage, and life safety services. The Assistant Director will collaborate with various stakeholders, supervise teams, and provide strategic guidance for critical infrastructure services that support the university's missions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise team leads and staff direct reports to solve issues and set team goals.
  • Provide coaching and career development guidance to team leads and staff direct reports.
  • Use performance management best practices to help direct reports succeed individually and as a team.
  • Oversee the services of the team to ensure quality, standards, and best practices are met.
  • Participate in IT Infrastructure management meetings and collaborate with other teams to ensure reliable service delivery.
  • Lead assigned teams through new projects and initiatives, adapting to new technologies and best practices.
  • Assist in planning and maintaining a multimillion-dollar budget for capital and operational funding.
  • Advise the Director of Enterprise Infrastructure on relevant issues and solutions.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including campus units and vendors.
  • Participate in peer groups to share and leverage knowledge from other institutions.
  • Represent assigned teams in meetings with customers and stakeholders.
  • Ensure service delivery meets customer expectations and needs.
  • Collaborate to develop short, medium, and long-term roadmaps for services.
  • Maintain communication channels with customers for resolution and improvement.
  • Engage with peers and vendors to follow technology trends and implement modernization strategies.
  • Create and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans for service interruptions.
  • Participate in OCIO leadership and manager's team as a standing member.
  • Communicate unit decisions and policies to direct reports.
  • Participate in organizational strategic or tactical planning as requested.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in IT-related functions, including supervisory or lead worker capacity.
  • Experience in virtualization, data storage and backups, or data center operations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of systems and operations within the areas of responsibility.
  • Familiarity with project management principles and monitoring tools.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and create solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues and stakeholders.
