About the position

The Assistant District Attorney (District Screener) at the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office is responsible for representing the State of Louisiana in various criminal matters across multiple courts in Orleans Parish. This role involves liaising with law enforcement and community organizations, reviewing cases for prosecution, and performing legal research. The position aims to enhance public safety while ensuring justice is served, reflecting the office's commitment to a modern approach to prosecution.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the State of Louisiana in all criminal matters before courts in Orleans Parish.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with NOPD District Commanders.
  • Attend off-site meetings at NOPD district level and engage with community organizations.
  • Review felony and misdemeanor cases for prosecution.
  • Interact with law enforcement, victims, and witnesses.
  • Draft bills of information, motions, and other pleadings.
  • Present cases to the grand jury.
  • Represent the OPDA at preliminary or bond hearings.
  • Perform legal research.

Requirements

  • Member of the Louisiana Bar in good standing.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in criminal law.
  • Ability to conduct legal research and apply legal analysis to factual scenarios.
  • Public speaking ability and effective communication skills.
  • Comfort with technology, including the ability to learn case management software.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weeks of over 40 hours.
  • Dependability in both attendance and work product.
