About the position

The Assistant Divisional Music and Creative Arts Director at The Salvation Army North & Central Illinois Division plays a pivotal role in inspiring, equipping, and discipling worshippers and creative-minded individuals through diverse artistic expressions. This position is integral to the Music & Creative Arts Department, which aims to empower the division by providing consistent and relevant resources while engaging in missional activities through the arts. The individual in this role will work closely with the Director of Music & Creative Arts to ensure that musical and creative arts resources are available to enhance worship experiences and discipleship across the division. The Assistant Director will oversee Divisional and Regional Music & Creative Arts Instructors, managing their training, scheduling, lesson planning, and program evaluation. This role requires active participation in creating local strategic plans that address the needs of Corps music and creative arts programming, utilizing measurable outcomes to assess musical and missional efficiency. The Assistant Director is expected to lead and teach Corps music programs at least two days a week, facilitating the development of new initiatives and taking charge of projects as directed by the Director. In addition to leadership responsibilities, the Assistant Director will assist in organizing and promoting various music and creative arts events, including the Summer Music Conservatory and NCI Music Camp. The role also involves developing web and social media content to reflect the mission and progress of departmental initiatives. The Assistant Director will represent The Salvation Army at various events and maintain the instrument inventory and music library, ensuring that all activities align with the organization's mission and values. This position requires a commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, with a focus on fostering positive relationships and providing excellent service to clients and colleagues. The individual will be evaluated based on the effectiveness of their contributions to the department's goals and the overall mission of The Salvation Army.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the vision of the Music & Creative Arts department as defined by the Director of Music & Creative Arts.
  • Oversee Divisional and Regional Music & Creative Arts Instructors in training, scheduling, lesson planning, program evaluation and reporting.
  • Assist the Director of Music & Creative Arts in supervision of Summer Divisional Interns.
  • Create local strategic plans to meet the needs of Corps music and creative arts programming and outreach using measurable outcomes.
  • Teach/lead Corps music programs at least two days/nights at the Corps per week or as needed.
  • Facilitate the development of new music and creative arts initiatives and take the lead in those projects as instructed by the Director.
  • Assist the Director in delivering effective leadership training for Corps music leaders and musicians.
  • Provide inspiring and engaging leadership within the North and Central Illinois Division.
  • Assist with the publicity and implementation of Divisional and Regional Music and Creative Arts events and initiatives.
  • Organize, resource, and lead Regional Music Schools throughout the NCI Division.
  • Develop web and social media content reflecting the mission and progress of department initiatives.
  • Attend and support Territorial, Divisional, and Regional Music and Arts events.
  • Maintain the instrument inventory and music library in a timely manner.
  • Participate on Divisional Music/Arts committees and others relating to the Mission of The Salvation Army.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in music or creative arts field, with advanced training or degree desired.
  • 3 years experience working with music and creative arts programs, preferably in a Salvation Army leadership setting.
  • Pianist or guitar playing experience preferred.
  • Choral and Worship leadership experience desirable.
  • Proven experience within Corps Music and Arts programs.
  • Willingness to travel by car.
  • Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary.
