About the position

The Florida Catholic and La Voz Católica Newspapers are seeking an Assistant Editor who will work under the direction of the Editor to effectively communicate news and information related to the Catholic faith and the Archdiocese of Miami. This role requires fluency in both English and Spanish, as the Assistant Editor will be responsible for disseminating information through various media channels, including print, digital, podcasts, and social media. The primary goal of this position is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the activities of Catholic individuals and organizations. The Assistant Editor will cover news events, write articles, take photographs, and translate content from Spanish to English as needed. They will also edit and post daily news updates on the website, assist in planning the monthly print publication, and manage submissions from schools, parishes, and agencies within the archdiocese. In collaboration with the Editor, the Assistant Editor will assign freelancers to cover stories and ensure their submissions meet the publication's standards. In addition to newspaper responsibilities, the Assistant Editor will coordinate and manage blogs, oversee the website's content, and maintain archives of print and digital files. They will also write scripts and host podcasts, ensuring that all content aligns with the mission and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami. The role requires strong communication skills, a deep understanding of journalism ethics, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders within the archdiocese and the broader community.

Responsibilities

  • Cover news events and write stories for the newspapers.
  • Take photographs for publication and translate stories from Spanish to English as necessary.
  • Edit and post daily news updates on the website and assist in planning the monthly print publication.
  • Edit and post article and photo submissions from schools, parishes, and agencies of the archdiocese.
  • Assign freelancers to cover stories and edit their submissions in consultation with the editor.
  • Select or solicit submissions for the weekly 'Let's Talk' blog and edit them for publication in both English and Spanish.
  • Coordinate the publication of the 'Through the Catholic Lens' blog and perform final edits before posting.
  • Co-manage the website, fixing bugs and updating information in collaboration with the webmaster and communications team.
  • Approve comments and event submissions for the website, ensuring they meet standards of relevance and accuracy.
  • Select and break up papal encyclicals or other documents for posting under the 'Catechesis' tab.
  • Maintain and safeguard permanent files of newspaper print editions and digital files of photographs.
  • Write scripts and host podcasts, overseeing the final editing and uploading of content to various platforms.
  • Mentor and encourage freelancers in their work and keep track of Google statistics for various media outputs.
  • Assist the editor with special projects and build relationships with various archdiocesan entities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and experience in reporting, writing, or copyediting for print media.
  • Experience with photography or basic knowledge of photographic principles.
  • Mastery of written and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of journalism ethics and ability to produce engaging content across various media formats.
  • Excellent critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and basic HTML; knowledge of Photoshop and content management systems is a plus.
  • Good computer literacy and ability to navigate online applications effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church and its mission.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, English, Spanish, or Public Relations.
  • Five years' experience in print communications and digital media.
  • Experience in a Roman Catholic environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of social media applications and platforms; mobile services experience preferred.
