About the position

The Assistant Editor at Harvard University plays a crucial role in the publication of Harvard Ukrainian Studies, focusing on organizing and editing book reviews and scholarly articles. This position requires collaboration with publishers and scholars to ensure timely and accurate publication of reviews and articles, contributing to the reputation of the Institute and the field of Ukrainian studies.

Responsibilities

  • Solicit and organize book reviews for Harvard Ukrainian Studies (HUS) by identifying recently published books, coordinating with publishers, and managing reviewer deadlines.
  • Edit book reviews for HUS, ensuring accuracy, balance, and adherence to HURI stylistic standards.
  • Edit scholarly articles for HUS, including initial reviews, author follow-ups, and proofreading to maintain academic integrity.
  • Oversee the peer review process for articles, coordinating with qualified scholars and managing communication with authors regarding review outcomes.
  • Perform various editorial tasks, including proofreading and editing scholarly apparatuses, and managing publication materials for HURI.
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to publication, marketing, and distribution of HUS and other HURI publications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Slavic and East European studies with a focus in Ukrainian studies.
  • Advanced knowledge of Ukrainian and reading knowledge of another Slavic language.
  • Two years of related experience in a publishing environment, preferably with scholarly monographs or academic journals.
  • Proven project management skills and strong copy-editing and proofing skills in major manuals of style.
  • Good transliteration skills, including knowledge of IPA and LC romanization.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in an area of Ukrainian studies.
  • Excellent knowledge of Ukrainian in an editorial context.
  • Proficiency in other Slavic languages such as Russian or Polish.
  • Reading knowledge of German or French.
