About the position

The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey (JFSNJ) is seeking a creative and eager Assistant Editor for the Jewish Community Voice. This full-time position, requiring 35 hours per week, is ideal for individuals who are passionate about storytelling and have a strong organizational mindset. The Assistant Editor will play a crucial role in guiding various departments and agencies towards achieving the organization's goals while working towards the vision for the community's publications. This role is exempt and may require attendance at meetings and coverage of events during evenings and weekends, reflecting the dynamic nature of the position. As the Assistant Editor, you will be responsible for ensuring that all content meets the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and ethical journalism practices. You will collaborate closely with the editor, advertising and production teams, as well as community members and volunteer leaders. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional writing skills, a meticulous eye for detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. You will be expected to manage multiple deadlines, prioritize tasks effectively, and adapt to changing priorities as needed. In addition to editing and writing articles, you will also be tasked with covering community events, preparing feature stories, and editing press releases. You will monitor and curate content for the Voice's website and social media platforms, working alongside the JFed marketing team to enhance the community's online presence. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the editor, advertising and production teams, and community members.
  • Edit content for grammar, punctuation, and factual accuracy, ensuring critical information is highlighted.
  • Demonstrate strong writing skills and proficiency in AP style.
  • Adapt to changes in deadlines or priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Manage deadlines, prioritize tasks, and coordinate with other writers and the editor.
  • Understand and apply ethical journalism practices.
  • Stay informed about current local and international trends, particularly regarding Israel.
  • Cover community events and prepare feature stories as assigned by the editor.
  • Edit press releases and wire service stories.
  • Obtain and edit copy for Voice supplements.
  • Monitor and obtain content for the Voice website and social media platforms.
  • Work with the JFed marketing team to cultivate content for social media.
  • Prepare promotional materials for the Voice in collaboration with the Federation Marketing Department.
  • Attend Voice and Federation meetings and programs as requested by the editor.
  • Edit and write articles, filling in for the editor when necessary.
  • Assist the editor in completing Voice tasks as required.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Marketing Officer and leadership on stories and projects.

Requirements

  • 3 years of professional experience in journalism.
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional writing skills and proficiency in AP style.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changes in deadlines or priorities.
  • Understanding of ethical journalism practices.
  • Awareness of current local and international trends, particularly regarding Israel.
