About the position

The Assistant Editor position at the Minnesota House of Representatives is a full-time role within the nonpartisan Public Information Services office. This office is dedicated to supporting the House's mission through various nonpartisan news and information services, including reporting on legislative activities, producing informational publications, and managing media coverage. The role involves editing and overseeing content for publications and social media, as well as providing guidance to temporary writers and assisting in the hiring and training of staff.

Responsibilities

• First edit of materials for all department publications, website content, and television production scripts.
• Report on legislative committees and floor sessions.
• Provide work direction and advice to temporary writers.
• Assist with the hiring and training of writing staff.
• Distribute meeting schedules via the House's electronic schedule mailing list.
• Assist with social media postings.

Requirements

• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
• Ability to write clearly and quickly about complex subjects.
• News reporting experience is strongly preferred.
• Understanding of state government and the legislative process is recommended.
• Knowledge and familiarity with AP style.
• Proven abilities with Microsoft Office 365 word processing and database software.
• Knowledge and familiarity with social media platforms.
• BA or BS in communications and/or journalism strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in legislative reporting.
• Familiarity with photography and television production.
