About the position

The Assistant Editor at Harvard Ukrainian Studies plays a crucial role in the editorial process, working closely with the journal's editor to organize and edit reviews and articles for publication. This position is vital for maintaining the journal's reputation and ensuring timely publication, which is essential for the field of Ukrainian studies. The Assistant Editor will manage the peer review process, coordinate with authors and publishers, and ensure that all content meets academic standards and stylistic guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Solicit and organize book reviews for the journal, identifying recently published books and coordinating with publishers and reviewers.
• Edit book reviews for accuracy, balance, and adherence to publication standards, including citations and references.
• Edit scholarly articles, ensuring they meet academic integrity and stylistic standards, and manage communication with authors regarding revisions.
• Oversee the peer review process for articles, coordinating with qualified scholars and managing deadlines and submissions.
• Perform various editorial tasks, including proofreading and editing texts for publication, and assisting with marketing and distribution efforts.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Slavic and East European studies with a focus on Ukrainian studies.
• Two years of related experience in a publishing environment, preferably with scholarly monographs or academic journals.
• Proven project management skills and strong copy-editing abilities in major style manuals.
• Advanced knowledge of Ukrainian and reading knowledge of another Slavic language.

Nice-to-haves

• PhD in an area of Ukrainian studies.
• Proficiency in other Slavic languages such as Russian or Polish, and reading knowledge of German or French.
