About the position

The Assistant Editor for Brown University Digital Publications will play a crucial role in developing innovative digital scholarship aimed at both scholarly and public audiences. This position involves collaborating with a diverse team to create multimodal monographs and support humanities scholars in presenting their research through digital formats. The role emphasizes a commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice in digital publishing, while managing multiple projects and contributing to the acquisitions process.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director and a multi-skilled team to develop complex born-digital scholarship.
  • Support humanities scholars in creating new scholarly forms that utilize multimedia enhancements and interactive engagement.
  • Conceptualize, research, and administer multimodal monograph projects.
  • Build rapport and work effectively with a wide range of collaborators, including faculty, students, and university press staff.
  • Contribute to the acquisitions process and undertake developmental editing and copyediting as needed.
  • Manage timelines and budgets for multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Assist in the preparation of archival and multimedia assets for individual projects.
  • Administer national training workshops related to digital scholarly publishing.
  • Participate in relevant meetings and events across and beyond the Brown campus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a humanities or humanistic social sciences discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of digital project management and/or scholarly editorial experience.
  • Excellent copyediting skills and familiarity with style guides (CMOS preferred).
  • Experience working for a publisher or academic journal preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; familiarity with digital publishing platforms such as Fulcrum, Manifold, PubPub, Scalar, or WordPress preferred.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills with exceptional interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to set priorities, juggle competing demands, and meet deadlines.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
