About the position

The Assistant Editor position within the Global Communications and Media Relations department at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) plays a crucial role in promoting and positioning CFR and its publications through various media, marketing, and public relations channels. This role is integral to the Publications department, which is part of the David Rockefeller Studies Program, focusing on editing and producing CFR's online and print publications. The Assistant Editor will ensure consistency in CFR's style across all institutional outputs, contributing to the overall quality and coherence of the organization's communications. The Assistant Editor will be responsible for editing a wide range of CFR content, which includes publications, press releases, newsletters, brochures, media advisories, and other related materials. This position requires drafting press releases and newsletters, compiling and editing content for newsletters such as The World This Week and Members' Weekly, and managing editorial review processes and workflows. The Assistant Editor will also serve as the communications lead for select CFR publications and projects, ensuring that all products adhere to CFR's style guidelines. In addition to editing and drafting responsibilities, the Assistant Editor will field requests from journalists seeking expert opinions, assist with ad hoc writing and editing projects, and provide editorial assistance and training to CFR staff. The role also includes serving as the photo editor for the Annual report and supporting staffing needs for on-the-record events, collaborating closely with Communications colleagues as necessary. This position requires a flexible and positive attitude, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Editing a full range of CFR content, including publications, press releases, press notes, newsletters, brochures, media advisories, and other content.
  • Drafting press releases, press notes, newsletters, and other content.
  • Compiling, editing, and sending newsletters, including The World This Week and Members' Weekly.
  • Drafting and editing internal and external communications on behalf of the Executive Office and Human Resources as needed.
  • Serving as Communications lead for select CFR publications, projects, and products.
  • Ensuring CFR style consistency across all products, including promotional materials.
  • Managing editorial review processes and workflow.
  • Fielding journalists' requests for experts.
  • Assisting on ad hoc writing and editing projects as needed.
  • Providing editorial assistance and training to CFR staff as needed.
  • Serving as photo editor of the Annual report.
  • Assisting with staffing needs for on-the-record events and supporting Communications colleagues as needed.

Requirements

  • Degree with a concentration in international affairs or English with strong academic credentials.
  • One year of editorial/writing experience or internship experience in communications, journalism, publishing, or related field.
  • Proven knowledge of current U.S. foreign policy and international affairs issues.
  • Interest in a career in communications, journalism, publishing, or international relations.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including copyediting, fact checking, and headline writing.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Flexible, positive, team-oriented attitude and ability to independently balance multiple projects; proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule in order to respond to assignments due to breaking news.
