About the position

The Assistant Electrical Engineer at Burns & McDonnell will play a crucial role in supporting the Energy & Utilities Consulting team, specifically under the 1898 & Co. brand. This position is designed for recent graduates who are eager to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, working closely with consultants and project managers to tackle technical and economic challenges faced by energy and utility clients. The role involves assisting in a variety of power system studies that evaluate both fossil fuel and renewable energy sources, as well as the delivery systems that support them, including transmission and distribution networks. In this position, the Assistant Electrical Engineer will engage in power supply planning, due diligence, performance evaluations, site assessments, investment planning, and condition assessments. The role requires a solid understanding of engineering, financial, and economic principles, which will be applied to complete assigned tasks that have significant technical and business implications for client projects. The candidate will also assist in analyzing life-cycle costs by developing technical assumptions related to capital and operational costs, performance estimates, and economic forecasts. The Assistant Electrical Engineer will support the project team in conducting technical assessments that evaluate the impacts of regulatory agency rules, as well as designing, reviewing, and modifying project drawings as required. The role includes supporting power system planning and operations analysis, which encompasses power flow, transient stability, short circuit analysis, electromagnetic transients, reliability assessments, and economic dispatch. Additionally, the candidate will perform technical, engineering, economic, and financial studies related to utility projects, utilizing power system software for transmission and distribution study analysis. The position also involves developing detailed financial analyses using various computer-based software, preparing technical reports and presentations that summarize analytical results, and assisting in client presentations and contract administration for utility system design and planning. The Assistant Electrical Engineer will be expected to comply with all company policies and standards while performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with developing solutions to technical and economic challenges for energy and utility clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field from an accredited program required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program strongly preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of standard engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 strongly preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
  • Legally authorized to work permanently in the country where this position is located.
