About the position

The Assistant Engineer (Civil) position at the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation involves providing engineering services related to the design and construction of various infrastructure projects. This role is part of the NY HELPS program, which allows for non-competitive appointments for eligible candidates. The position requires a strong foundation in civil engineering principles and the ability to oversee projects ensuring compliance with engineering standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide engineering services including consultation, evaluation, planning, systems design, and project oversight.
• Supervise and evaluate the work of technicians in engineering projects.
• Ensure work conforms to accepted engineering standards in the construction, extension, alteration, remodeling, and maintenance of infrastructure such as roads, buildings, and water systems.
• Monitor public health regulations and water systems, including electrical and power supply systems, fire protection systems, and large structures.

Requirements

• Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and a qualifying bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field or one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience.
• A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and as a condition for continued employment.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in the design and construction of parks, roads, bridges, and recreational facilities.
