About the position

The Assistant Engineer/Engineer Trainee (Civil/Transportation) position at the New York State Thruway Authority is a full-time, permanent role that involves providing professional engineering design services for various bridge repair, rehabilitation, and reconstruction projects. The position is part of the NY HELPS program, which allows for non-competitive appointments for qualified candidates. The successful candidate will work under the Department of Engineering's Office of Design, located at the Authority's Administrative Headquarters in Albany, NY. This role requires a strong understanding of current New York State design standards, procedures, and specifications, including the Project Design Manual and AASHTO guidelines. The candidate will be responsible for preparing design reports, plans, specifications, and engineer's estimates, as well as managing engineering design consultants and providing construction support as projects progress. As an Engineer Trainee, the individual will undergo a 24-month traineeship that leads to the Assistant Engineer position, requiring proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and successful completion of the traineeship. The role offers opportunities for professional growth and development within the New York State Thruway Authority, with the potential for conversion to competitive status after one year of permanent appointment. The position also allows for telecommuting, providing flexibility in work arrangements.

Responsibilities

  • Providing professional engineering design services for various bridge repair, rehabilitation, and reconstruction projects.
  • Preparing design reports/studies, plans, specifications, engineer's estimates (PS&E), and design calculations for bridge or highway projects.
  • Knowledge of current New York State design standards, procedures, and specifications including the Project Design Manual and AASHTO guidelines.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation and Inroads is preferred, and managing engineering design consultants may be required.
  • Preparing scopes of services, tracking project progress, and evaluating consultants.
  • Providing construction support as projects progress through construction.

Requirements

  • Must have proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE).
  • A qualifying bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology.
  • One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, or traffic management systems.
