About the position

The Assistant Engineering Project Manager at Harris County Flood Control District plays a crucial role in managing small projects and tasks within larger projects, focusing on flood reduction and maintenance. This position is designed for individuals looking to develop their technical engineering skills under the supervision of a registered engineer, with responsibilities that include project management, public engagement, and technical documentation preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage well-defined small projects or small tasks within a larger project.
  • Acquire basic technical engineering skills in hydrology and hydraulics.
  • Work under the supervision of a registered engineer on assigned projects.
  • Perform engineering tasks related to the design of flood reduction and maintenance projects.
  • Prepare portions of the final project documentation.
  • Make limited judgments regarding projects that could affect scopes, schedules, and budgets.
  • Proactively seek technical guidance to ensure tasks are completed within allocated scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Learn and become proficient with project management tools and techniques.
  • Assist in preparation for public meetings and technical presentations.
  • Promote client satisfaction to internal and external clients.
  • Advise management of problems and prepare recommendations for solutions.
  • Prepare correspondence, complete forms, and maintain records related to work activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Engineer in Training certification required within six months of employment.
  • Strong skills using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access).
  • Knowledge of construction standards, practices, and techniques.
  • Good diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good analytical skills in applying guidelines and adapting standard methods.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of verifiable experience in civil engineering-related work.
  • Experience with hydrologic, hydraulic, HEC Modeling, and/or civil engineering projects.
  • Experience with GIS applications.
  • Experience with AutoCAD software.
