About the position

The Assistant Executive Director will play a crucial role in the Executive and Contracts Department of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), based in Los Angeles, CA. The DGA serves as the collective voice for over 19,000 members, advocating for their creative and economic rights while supporting their professional development. This position involves overseeing and enforcing contracts related to non-dramatic programming, which includes a variety of formats such as reality shows, quiz and game shows, talk shows, daytime dramas, as well as news and sports programming. The Assistant Executive Director will work closely with staff in both Los Angeles and New York, ensuring that contract enforcement aligns with the organization's objectives. In addition to contract oversight, the Assistant Executive Director will coordinate with various departments to support non-dramatic contract enforcement and organizing efforts, particularly in the realm of reality programming. A significant aspect of this role includes participating in the national collective bargaining process for non-dramatic and news/sports programming, leading negotiations with major broadcasters such as Fox Sports, NFL Network, and KCET. The position also entails serving as a staff liaison for the Western AD/SM/PA Council and its subcommittees, as well as managing various membership committees as assigned. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in contract analysis and enforcement, particularly in collective bargaining agreements. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the role requires collaboration with a diverse team and the ability to synthesize input from multiple sources. The Assistant Executive Director must be well-organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing the demands of night and weekend work, along with some travel requirements. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is also necessary for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and enforce contracts for directors and their teams on non-dramatic programming.
  • Coordinate with non-dramatic department staff in Los Angeles and New York.
  • Support non-dramatic contract enforcement and organizing objectives, particularly for reality organizing.
  • Play a key role in national non-dramatic and news/sports collective bargaining process.
  • Lead negotiations for broadcast agreements including Fox Sports, NFL Network, and KCET.
  • Serve as Staff liaison for Western AD/SM/PA Council and its subcommittees.
  • Be responsible for various membership committees as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in the analysis and enforcement of contracts, preferably collective bargaining agreements.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and analytical skills.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with a team and assimilate input from multiple sources.
  • Well-organized and self-motivated.
  • Previous experience in union representation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite.
