About the position

The Assistant Farm Manager at The Hotchkiss School is responsible for supporting the management and operations of a 287-acre educational production farm. This role involves hands-on agricultural work, including planting, harvesting, and caring for livestock, while also providing educational opportunities for students. The position requires a passion for sustainable agriculture and the ability to work in various weather conditions, ensuring the farm meets its production goals for the school's dining program and local food pantries.

Responsibilities

  • Hand plant, weed, cultivate with equipment, sustainable pest management, and harvest of crops.
  • Operate tractors and other farm equipment.
  • Assist in the care of livestock, including ~100 laying hens.
  • Manage summer interns and volunteer groups at the farm.
  • Track harvest and donation numbers.
  • Deliver produce to dining and community partners using school vehicles.
  • Assist with carpentry, land management, and fence line maintenance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Experience farming in a production setting is preferred.
  • Experience operating farm equipment.
  • Basic light farm carpentry skills and proficiency with power tools.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interface with farm staff and visitors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in livestock husbandry.
  • Skills in irrigation installation and maintenance.
