About the position

Under the general direction of the Fire Mechanic, the Assistant Mechanic shall be responsible for the maintenance and general repair of all Fire Department apparatus and related equipment and shall maintain the records of all maintenance and inventory of tools and equipment. Assignments include but are not limited to the maintenance and repair of Fire Apparatus and specialized equipment, such as fire boats, hazmat vehicles, SCBA, and small engines and assorted power equipment. Assist in the development of preventive maintenance program for all apparatus and equipment. Reports immediately to Superiors any apparatus out of service. Repairs and maintains hydraulic systems for aerial devices and vehicle generators. Repairs, rebuilds and maintains diesel-powered apparatus and equipment under the supervision of the Fire Mechanic. Performs welding and cutting operations to fabricate or repair apparatus and equipment. Performs electrical diagnosis of both conventional 12 and 24 volt systems and multiplexed apparatus control systems and equipment. Installs or retrofits electrical systems on both emergency lighting, equipment or vehicles. Requisitions adequate number of spare parts and maintains inventory records of the same. Inputs all purchase orders, parts and workorders into the department's computerized tracking system. Performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of preventive maintenance program for all apparatus and equipment.
  • Report any apparatus out of service to superiors immediately.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic systems for aerial devices and vehicle generators.
  • Repair, rebuild and maintain diesel-powered apparatus and equipment under supervision.
  • Perform welding and cutting operations to fabricate or repair apparatus and equipment.
  • Perform electrical diagnosis of both conventional 12 and 24 volt systems.
  • Install or retrofit electrical systems on emergency lighting, equipment or vehicles.
  • Requisition spare parts and maintain inventory records.
  • Input purchase orders, parts and work orders into the computerized tracking system.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High school, GED or vocational technical school.
  • Three years' experience as a medium/heavy duty vehicle mechanic.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain ASE Medium/Heavy Duty Truck certification in T2-Diesel Engine within one year of appointment.
  • Must obtain ASE Certifications in T3-Drive Train, T4-Brakes, T5-Suspension & Steering, T6-Electrical/Electronic Systems, T7-Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC), and T8-Preventative Maintenance Inspection within one year of appointment.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid Class A or B State of Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year of appointment.

Nice-to-haves

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) emergency vehicle certifications (F1) Inspection, Maintenance and Testing of Fire Apparatus.
  • Additional emergency vehicle certifications from the NFPA.
