About the position

Washington University in St. Louis seeks an experienced attorney for the position of Assistant General Counsel, Clinical Affairs (AsstGC). The University's School of Medicine provides world class health care in 78 specialties at 130 clinical locations. The School of Medicine and BJC Health System ('BJC') are separate entities that work in close collaboration as an integrated academic health system in the eastern region of Missouri. The AsstGC's primary responsibility is to provide legal support, advice, and counsel to the School's clinical leadership and health care providers. The AsstGC will also support the Associate General Counsel with primary responsibility for the defense of medical malpractice claims and advising School leaders charged with running the School's clinical operations. The AsstGC works collaboratively with other members of the Office of Vice Chancellor and General Counsel as necessary to ensure the delivery of prompt and informed legal services.

Responsibilities

  • Advises clinicians and senior leadership regarding nuanced questions involving matters such as guardianship and consent, often in time-sensitive circumstances.
  • Advises school leaders and providers on matters involving provider licenses, medical staff issues, patient safety and patient privacy.
  • Drafts and revises consent forms to address evolving medical treatments and practices.
  • Collaborates with BJC legal counsel regarding clinical practice issues that arise in the course of the Washington University/BJC joint clinical enterprise.
  • Advises the school's providers regarding collaborative practice agreements between physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
  • Advises the Graduate Medical Education office on matters such as affiliation, education and rotation agreements.
  • Prepares comprehensive summaries of medical malpractice cases based on information provided by outside counsel and the university's Risk Management department.
  • Serves as counsel to various clinical committees; e.g., telemedicine, credentialing.

Requirements

  • J.D. - Juris Doctor
  • Current license to practice law.
  • Active membership in the Missouri Bar, or immediate eligibility for same.
  • Progressively Responsible Law Practice (7 Years)

Nice-to-haves

  • Responsible experience in health care law, including clinical practice matters and/or medical malpractice is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with university setting.
