The Assistant General Counsel I position at the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) is a full-time role that provides legal counsel to the agency. The OTC is dedicated to promoting tax compliance through transparency and fairness in the administration of the tax code. The AGC will be responsible for a variety of legal functions, including policy and procedure review, litigation, legal research, contract writing and negotiation, and monitoring proposed legislation. This role requires the preparation and trial of both routine and progressively difficult cases, ensuring that the agency's legal interests are well-represented in administrative hearings and district court cases involving state tax collection. In this position, the AGC will prepare briefs, motions, and other documents necessary for trial, analyze factual and legal issues, and review policies and regulations relevant to the agency's operations. The role involves conducting legal research, preparing legal documents and advisory opinions, and participating in pre-trial conferences. The AGC will also be responsible for examining witnesses, arguing motions, and summarizing the agency's case in court. Additionally, the AGC will engage in negotiations with taxpayers to resolve delinquencies and questions regarding their accounts. The position requires comprehensive knowledge of applicable tax laws, agency policies, and legal principles, as well as strong analytical and critical thinking skills. The AGC will work with limited supervision, planning and organizing their own work while ensuring compliance with legal standards and timelines. The role may require occasional travel, and the ability to telework may also be necessary based on the agency's needs. The core work hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with some flexibility required.
