About the position

The position of Assistant Coach is for the purpose of assisting the Head Coach in organizing and conducting the athletic program to meet the needs of the participants, by providing them worthwhile learning experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit exceptional integrity and character at all times.
  • Be a positive role model in the school and community.
  • Perform delegated duties assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Be knowledgeable of and implement the planned system and style of play as established by the Head Coach.
  • Enforce all athletic regulations and take initiative in making proposals for improvement in the program through the Head Coach to the Athletic Director and principal.
  • Attend meetings and professional development organized and conducted by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or principal.
  • Demonstrate proper active supervision during all scheduled activities or student/athletes including, but not limited to, game, practice, locker room, and transportation.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of skill development, training techniques, fundamentals, game strategy, and the rules of the sport.
  • Commit to continued professional development and improvement of the knowledge of skill development, training techniques, fundamentals, game strategy, and the rules of the sport.
  • Be responsible for the care, distribution, and collection for District equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate with athletes in a manner that models respect.
  • Develop and maintain a positive rapport with students, athlete, parents, and staff throughout the program and school.
  • Cooperate with other school-sponsored sports by encouraging athletes to play more than one sport.
  • Practice professional conduct during events and practices.
  • Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.
  • Handle program finances that align with current District practice.
  • Report any conduct that violates the physical, mental, or emotional safety of anyone involved in the program within 24 hours to the Athletic Director.
  • Adhere to all interscholastic policies, rules, and procedures, working within the confines of the rules and by-laws of the OSAA (as applicable), Mt. Hood Conference, and Board Policies.
  • Support the academic achievement of student/athletes.
  • Report participant injuries to the trainer following current District procedures.
  • Attend all meetings as required by the Athletic Director, principal, Head Coach, or league leadership.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in coaching with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of the sport, coaching techniques, and student supervision.
  • Skills to effectively communicate in verbal and written modes with student/athletes, parents, assistant coaches, and other school staff.
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of District policies.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks.
  • Ability to maintain records and establish cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and other school personnel.
  • Significant physical abilities including lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perceptions/accommodation/field of vision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to speak a second language preferred.
