About the position

The Assistant Grocery Manager plays a crucial role in managing the grocery department to maximize sales and profits while ensuring optimal store conditions. This position involves supervising staff, maintaining inventory, and providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment. As an employee-owned company, the focus is on quality service and supporting local producers.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers and respond to their questions, requests, and complaints courteously.
  • Assist in hiring, firing, discipline, promotion, and evaluation of grocery department personnel.
  • Orient and train new grocery department employees and retrain existing employees as necessary.
  • Supervise and order grocery products and supplies to minimize out-of-stocks and maintain desired inventory turns.
  • Oversee the preparation of the backroom for merchandise receipt and check for shortages or overages.
  • Sort cases for stocking and ensure proper stocking of merchandise on shelves and displays.
  • Maintain cleanliness of store floors, check lanes, carts, restrooms, and shelves.
  • Supervise the loading of stocking carts and transportation of cases to the sales floor.
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed in operating equipment like balers and pallet jacks.
  • Count and record inventory items and perform manual price-marking of merchandise without UPC codes.
  • Manage the movement of damaged or unsalable products to the backroom and sort them accordingly.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by the Grocery Manager and substitute for absent workers.

Requirements

  • Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions regarding store policies and procedures.
  • Stable work and educational history.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Capability to read instructions, merchandise labels, and reports.
  • Good judgment in merchandising, employee scheduling, and operational policies.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in a grocery department.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
