About the position

The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) at NYC Health + Hospitals is responsible for overseeing the quality of care provided to Behavioral Health Adult patients. This role involves planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care under the guidance of the Head Nurse or Director of Nursing. The AHN is accountable for managing the unit, ensuring compliance with nursing policies, and leading nursing personnel to deliver high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and evaluate the quality of care for Behavioral Health Adult patients.
  • Manage the nursing unit to ensure quality care for every patient.
  • Implement the Nursing Department philosophy and objectives through departmental policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a team leader and assist the Head Nurse in guiding nursing personnel.
  • Adhere to established infection control protocols and policies related to patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Conduct risk assessments to reduce adverse events and ensure a safe environment.
  • Utilize electronic and paper medical records effectively.
  • Explain and instruct patients and families regarding therapeutic regimens and care environments.
  • Assume charge of the unit in the absence of the Head Nurse and participate in committee meetings as needed.
  • Maintain anecdotal records of significant occurrences and staff performance.
  • Participate in defining and maintaining standards of nursing practice and recognize emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited National League School of Nursing.
  • Current registration as a professional nurse in New York State.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification as required by the position.
  • Completion of general, service, and age-specific competency training.
  • Commitment to continued professional development.
  • Ability to teach patients and staff personnel effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaboration with medical/nursing and other healthcare providers.
  • Possess leadership skills including problem-solving and relationship management.
